MKUltra — CIA Mind Control Experiments

Declassified

The CIA conducted illegal experiments on unwitting human subjects from 1953 to 1973, testing drugs (including LSD), sensory deprivation, hypnosis, and psychological torture as potential mind control techniques.

Official Narrative

Conspiracy theorists claimed the CIA drugged people without consent. Surely a government agency wouldn't do that to its own citizens.

Declassified Record

Confirmed by the Church Committee (1975) and declassified documents. CIA Director Richard Helms ordered most files destroyed in 1973, but 20,000 pages survived in financial records. Multiple documented victims including Frank Olson (died after being dosed with LSD without knowledge). Project ran 149+ sub-projects across 80+ institutions.

Significance

One of the most thoroughly documented cases of a "conspiracy theory" proven true by declassified government records. The partial destruction of records means the full scope may never be known.
